Lil'l Abner & The Mountain Boys Imperial Porcelain

10 am - 5 pm Tue/Wed/Fri. 10 am - 8:30 pm Thu. 9 am - 5 pm Sat. Free admission on Thursdays. The Imperial Porcelain Corporation of Zanesville manufactured functional and decorative ceramics between about 1945 and 1960. The 43 pieces of Imperial Porcelain in the exhibition were donated by Mrs. Margaret LeMaster, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Fred Phillips, who had been investors in the Imperial Porcelain Corporation. Imperial made two series of whimsical figures based on popular American cartoon characters of the 1930’s and 1940’s. These were the Dogpatch Series, based on Al Capp’s Li’l Abner cartoons, and the Paul Webb Mountain Boys Series, based on the Blue Ridge Mountain Boys cartoons done for Esquire and The New Yorker Magazine. Both series reflected 1920’s stereotypes of rural Appalachian dwellers as lazy, ignorant, violent, and ill-kempt. Webb and Capp, however, took the stereotypes and reconstructed them as comical in a broad but very human manner, and as independent, resourceful, and strongly devoted to family and friends. The cartoon characters were translated into porcelain by P. H. Genter, General Manager of Imperial. The figures were cast, fired, hand-painted, and packaged at the Zanesville plant. Most of the pieces in collection were made in 1947. Included in the exhibition will be examples of other Imperial Series, including the American Folklore Series.

In Harmony with Nature

9 am - 4 pm. Includes lunch and refreshments. Please preregister. Creating Green Space with Native Plants. Guest speakers: Jim McCormac - Keynote Speaker. "Backyards and Beyond: Plant Locally, Save Globally". Ann Bonner - "Trees and More". Michael Flanders "How we are complying with EPA mandates". Hal Kneen - "What Could Be?". Dr. Frank Porter - "Creating Rain Gardens". Recently, the Environmental Protection Agency has demanded that public utilities create green space to offset the tremendous cost of maintaining lawns and to lessen the amount of runoff into over-taxed and antiquated storm drain systems. All too often, public authorities choose non-native species to satisfy this mandate. Many of these non-native species are invasive and only exacerbate the situation. Properly using native plants to create green space can rectify many of the environmental problems caused by the misuse of land in public areas. Native plants are also increasingly being used in gardens as ornamentals. Little attention is given to the environmental importance of using the proper species to create natural habitats for insect pollinators and wildlife. Private landowners can do their part to provide green space by creating rain gardens and wildlife habitats with native plants.

The Ridges: Remodeled and Restored, Selection of Architectural Drawings from 1923 – 1951 Dates: April 9 – August 15, 2010 This exhibition features 18 architectural drawings that archive the preservation and maintenance of the Ridges buildings, known as the Athens State Hospital. These highly detailed, hand-drafted plans are documentations of the architectural and engineering design methods used in the first half of the 20th century. Borrowed from the Ohio University planning office, the various technical drawings reveal the intricate craftsmanship, attention to detail and the meticulous process of renovation planning. Specifically, the blueprints in this exhibition depict the improvements to the tuberculosis cottage and infirmary, remodeling of the men’s and women’s ward, exterior painting and repairs of entrance porch of the main administration buildings.

Tue/Wed 12-5 pm. Thu 12-8 pm. Fri 10 am - 5 pm. Sat/Sun 1-5 pm. The most unique feature of the Kennedy collection is the series of Navajo sandpainting textiles that Edwin Kennedy commissioned with the assistance of Red Rock Trading Post owners Troy and Edith Kennedy over nearly four decades. These weavings reflect sandpainting designs used in six traditional ceremonial healing practices: Beautyway, Waterway, Bead Chant, Great Star Chant, Hailway, and Coyoteway. It is, by all accounts, the largest single collection of sandpainting textiles in existence.

Strawberry Fields Forever

7:30 pm Thu/Fri/Sat. 2:30 pm Sat. Presented by Havering College in association with Hocking College. The fourth International CrossOver Project will be Strawberry Fields Forever - a new Beatles musical written and produced by Peter Dayson will be arriving in Nelsonville after performances in London and Essex. Beatlemania is about to sweep through England and land in Nelsonville. Peter said: "It is set in Liverpool in the late 1960s and tells the story of the trials and tribulations of the Burchill family. With more than 20 Beatles songs we very much hope it will be an evening to remember." The CrossOver Project has been an outstanding success since it started three years ago. The idea is that staff and students from Havering college and Hocking College in Ohio "cross over" for transatlantic productions in a London West End Theatre and in America. the standard is such that Godspell and Hair won Best Musical of the Year in 2007 and 2008 in America. Last year audiences were ahead of television's X Factor judges when they applauded Havering College Performing Arts student Stacey Solomon in the 2009 CrossOver Project production of Oh! What a Lovely War.

Learn to be a BBQ Judge - Certified KCBS

9 AM - 3 PM. $90 Non-KCBS member fee (includes 1 year membership and monthly newsletter). $55 KCBS member (must show proof of membership at time of class). Have you always wanted to judge at barbecue contests but did not know how? Well, here is your chance to become a Certified Kansas City Barbecue Society, (KCBS) BBQ Judge. The Nelsonville Area Chamber of Commerce along with the Kansas City Barbecue Society is offering a KCBS Barbecue Judging Class on Saturday, April 24, 2010. Students of this class will learn all aspects of competition barbecue judging, how to taste it, smell it, prod it and otherwise determine whether it is worthy of honor and cash prizes. After learning the guidelines of judging, the students will have a chance to judge for themselves. Barbecued meats in each category are prepared and presented competition style, so that the judges-to-be can test their knowledge as if they were at a competition. Barbecue judges are not paid, but many believe that the smoked meat they consume, about two pounds at each contest, is fair compensation. As barbecue competitions become more popular around the country, skilled judges are increasingly in demand. Certified KCBS judges receive preferential treatment when contest organizers are choosing judges. More information and registration forms are available at www.ohiobarbeque.com or www.nelsonvillechamber.com.

The most unique feature of the Kennedy collection is the series of Navajo sandpainting textiles that Edwin Kennedy commissioned with the assistance of Red Rock Trading Post owners Troy and Edith Kennedy over nearly four decades. Can We Talk Adult Book Discussion

6:30-8 pm. We will be discussing the book "And You Know You Should Be Glad" by Bob Greene. Bestselling author Greene (Duty) has filled a shelf with two dozen books, including his 1993 novel All Summer Long, while appearing as a broadcast journalist (Nightline) and writing for newspapers (the Chicago Tribune) and magazines (Life). Now he looks back on his youth in Bexley, Ohio (pop. 13,000), where he and his four pals grew up together, calling themselves ABCDJ (for Allen, Bob, Chuck, Dan and Jack). Their lives' paths diverged, but they always stayed in contact; in 2004, the news that Jack was terminally ill reunited them. Then and now, the group used jokes "to hide our feelings—to pretend to feel nothing... [which] seemed much better than the alternative." Greene met Jack in kindergarten, and they remained best friends for life. Remembering people and places they shared, the two revisit old haunts, discovering that their beloved Toddle House, where they once went for late-night chocolate pie, is now a Pizza Plus. Greene's repetitive, rambling free associations recall everything from his Halloween costume and old songs to ice cream parlors, state fairs and clothing fads. Unfortunately, the author's dusty attic of lost Americana is cluttered with clichés, nostalgia and overly sentimental yearnings. For more information or to register for the "Can We Talk" program please e-mail Linda Parker at lparker@pcdl.org.
